Earning A Bachelor’s Degree – A Way To Become A Qualified Occupational Therapist?

Many of us are dreaming of becoming an occupational therapist and help those people with mental and physical difficulties? There are many roads to take to start a career in occupational therapy. The road to take will depend on what type of job you are looking for.

The most basic requirement to land a job in the field of occupational therapy is a bachelor’s degree. There is no other way to start a career than getting the proper degree needed. A bachelor’s degree is what is required for entry-level jobs.

However, if your ultimate goal is to become an occupational therapist, the minimum requirement is a master’s degree. The admission to post-graduate occupational therapy degree programs are competitive and it will take 2 ½ years to complete. The first year will be more focused on classroom lectures while the last year will be focused on clinical settings. All occupational therapy students will learn physiology, psychology, gerontology and other courses. You have to complete the required hours of clinical work before you can graduate.

On the other hand, if you are still not sure if you want to become an occupational therapist but want to pursue a career in this field, there are other degrees to enroll. Below are the different types of degrees you can pursue depending on what type of job you intend to apply.

  • Occupational Therapy Assisting Certificate Program- This is a 1-year program intended for students who want to become occupational therapist aides.
  • Associate Degree in O.T. Assisting- This is a 2-year program designed for students, who want to become occupational therapy assistants. This program will prepare students to pass the national certification exam.
  • Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy- This program is also called 4+1 as you can finish both degrees in an accelerated schedule. Instead of completing a separate master’s degree for 2 years, you can get yours in just 1 year.
  • Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy- This program is known as graduate entry or master’s entry and is designed for students who already completed their bachelor’s degrees. This program will combine advanced training in a specialized area as well as preparation for the licensure exam.
  • Doctor of Occupational Therapy Degree- This is a 3-year program, which prepares students to become occupational therapists.
