To become a qualified practicing occupational therapist in the United States you can either pursue a Doctor of Occupational Therapy (DPT) or Master of Occupational Therapy (MPT) degree .
By far the most common option offered by accredited occupational therapy schools is the Doctor of Occupational Therapy (DPT) degree. However some schools still offer Master of Occupational Therapy (MPT) degree programs.
In 2009 The American Occupational Therapy Association reported that there were a total of 156 accredited occupational therapist programs being offered in the United States. 5 of these (3%) were Doctor of Occupational Therapy (DOT) degree programs and the remaining 251 (97%) were Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) degree programs.
Both the DOT and MOT education programs include clinical internships which need to be completed to qualify for the degree. In addition to this, occupational therapists are required to pass the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education or American Occupational Therapy Association Examination before they are eligible to practice anywhere in the United States.
