The NBCOT is the organization that provides certification to occupational therapists. NBCOT continually reviews the certification process to make sure that it is in line with the practice standards. This certification boards works with state regulators to oversee occupational therapists too. NBCOT informs practitioners about professional conduct, regulations and handles certification renewals as well.

The Certification Process

The first step in the certification process is to take the exam. You should be in the test center at least 30 minutes before the exam to complete the registration process. Do not forget to bring two types of IDs. Some of the accepted identification cards are driver’s license, state ID card, passport, green card or a state driver’s permit. The names on the IDs should be the same as the name in your authorization test letter. The secondary identification can be a student ID, ATM card, credit card with expiration date, voter’s registration card, or an employee ID card.

After registration, you can proceed with the test alongside other occupational therapy graduates. After the exam, you may have to wait at least a month to get the results. The results can be viewed online.

The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)

Occupational Therapist CertificationA body that can give occupational therapists national certification is the American Occupational Therapy Association. The requirements of AOTA includes a degree in occupational therapy, minimum of 5 years as an occupational therapist, minimum of 5000 hours working as an occupational therapist in the certified state area and employment verification.
